外文题名: | APPLICATION OF FUNCTIONAL EQUIVALENCE THEORY IN TRANSLATION OF CHILDREN'S POPULAR SCIENCE BOOKS—TRANSLATION REPORT OF EXTREME PLANET |

In recent years, a large number of Children’s popular science books have been imported to China. The imported books are very popular among Chinese children because of their preciseness, fun, popularity and other features. Therefore, translation activity is very important to the quality of these imported books and is even crucial to improving the scientific literacy of the whole nation. Given the limited previous and current studies on translation of children’s popular science books, it is very necessary and practical to conduct more researches on this topic. Apart from the general characters of most popular science books, children’s popular science books are featured with its own distinctive characters, for example its interestingness, concreteness. Eugene A. Nida’s “Functional Equivalence Theory” attaches great importance to readers’ reactions, which is very important for books that are targeted for children as the readers. Only in the guidance of such theoretical concept, can translators make their translation works better understood by children as well as more effective in spreading scientific knowledge to the public. Therefore, this report is based on the “Functional Equivalence Theory” to explore the translation strategies of Children’s popular science books. The specific and representative examples extracted from the English-to-Chinese translation experience of Extreme Planet are analyzed in this report to explain how the theory is applied in the translation activities of such texts. The exploration is carried out in three levels, i.e. semantic, cultural transplantation and style levels. In the end, the translation strategies of general use to achieve “Functional Equivalence” in similar texts are concluded. As a result, the report summarized and verified the guidance value of the “Functional Equivalence Theory”, for the purpose of offering reference and lessons to other translators.
