The conception of atomized individualism has a long history. In the context of modernity, atomized individualism, as a phenomenon, has been given new connotations. It has an inseparable relationship with the process of modernization and liberalism. And the phenomenon of atomized individuals is not only a projection and portrayal of liberalism in modern society, but it also controls the direction of modernity.

In the context of modernity, the atomized individualism constitutes a subtle paradox. On the one hand, it represents the disintegration of the old order (that is, the "disenchantment" in Weber's word) and the promotion of individual freedom. It is one of the most valuable achievements and wealth of the modernization; on the other hand, it increasingly becomes excessive. Atomism has brought great potential dangers or troubles to modern society and individuals in society. The overly strong individualism tendency and the ever-expanding personal consciousness seriously threaten the construction of identity at the national level and social interactions between individuals.

Related to the atomized individualism, modern and contemporary political philosophers have developed rich and intense discussions. Philosophers represented by theorists of socialism, republicanism, etc. (such as Charles Taylor, Daniel Bell) published many unique evaluations and insights on the status quo of atomized individualism. A group of political philosophers including Michael Sandel also provided their own solutions for the dilemma of atomized individualism.

This dissertation will continue along the path of these predecessors, combing of the development of atomized individualism. Also, this dissertation will analyse the current situation of atomized individualism and explore solutions after completing a comprehensive survey of atomism and presenting a reflection of liberalism.
