The global economic recession in recent years has made the employment situation particularly severe. Under the situation of poor employment environment and the surge in the number of master's degree students, more than half of the master's degree students perceive more serious employment anxiety. Therefore, intervention research on employment anxiety for college students is urgent and necessary. Based on the postmodernist perspective, the present study aimed to explore the effectiveness of Solution Focused Brief Therapy intervention for master's degree students' employment anxiety. This study utilized Solution Focused Brief Therapy to conduct eight interventions, one per week, for 50 minutes each, on the employment anxiety of a female master's degree student majoring in Mental Health Education at a university in Beijing. In this study, the pre-test, mid-test, post-test and follow-up test were administered to the participant using the College Career Anxiety Scale and the College Student Career Self-Efficacy Scale. Throughout the intervention, we employed various techniques such as reframing, shaping, generalization, scaling questions, miracle questioning, outcome questioning, and praise. In addition, semi-structured interviews were conducted with the participant during the pre-intervention and follow-up tests, and qualitative analyses were conducted to assess the effectiveness and applicability of the intervention. The results showed that, after the intervention, the participants’ employment anxiety scores dropped from 116 to 45, a total of 71 points (total score of 130), with 4.5 standard deviations, which was much lower than the average, and continued to decrease at the return visit; at the same time, the participants’ scores on the Career Self-Efficacy Scale for College Students improved. Among them, the changes in the dimensions of ‘worry about employment prospects’, ‘lack of employment support’ and ‘low self-confidence’ are more obvious; at the same time, the scores of the College Student Career Self-Efficacy Scale have improved. Through the semi-structured interviews and the expressions of the participant in the counselling sessions, there were obvious positive changes in the aspects of career planning, emotional experience, and interpersonal interactions of the participant. This study demonstrates the applicability and feasibility of Solution Focused Brief Therapy in alleviating employment anxiety of master's degree students, and it can play a good intervention effect, so that the participant’s employment anxiety level can be reduced, career self-efficacy can be enhanced, self-acceptance level can be increased, and they can cope with the employment scenario with a more adaptive thinking and action. This study is conducive to promoting the further application of Solution Focused Brief Therapy in colleges and universities. |
