Kazuo Ishiguro is an eminent Japanese-British author. Due to his international educational background and the universal value for the whole world, he is renowned as an international writer. He widely expresses concerns about humans’ existence and spiritual world in his works. In his novel Never Let Me Go, he depicts the conflicts within the society composing of clones and humans in terms of the problems of doomed fate and meaning of existence. This thesis will focus on the existential conditions of both clones and humans and interpret metaphorical connections between clones and humans. It will analyse how the clones and human beings passively accept the predestined endings, interpret the metaphorical meaning behind these depictions about clones and group of humans in this fiction, and introduce the predeterminate arrangements for all the existence in the real world. Further, under the theory of existentialism, this thesis will elucidate the free choices which indicate Kathy and humans’ self-transcendence on the way to passive acceptances. Through these analyses, this thesis will draw the conclusion that although there are inevitable arrangements for all the existence in the world, the meaning of life can be created and achieved through making free choices and realizing self-transcendence. In this novel, either the clones or the human kind have to accept the final doomed fate, which implies that all existences have to accept the predetermined destiny at the end of their life. However, on the way to passive acceptance, Kathy and the gardeners respectively become the representatives of clones and humans who have realized self-transcendence and achieved their own life meaning through making free choices.
