《在酒楼上》作为鲁迅自我分裂的开端，并未得到以往研究者的重视。这篇小说包含着鲁迅作为启蒙知识分子自我意识构造的难题。小说中的“我”在彷徨无依的状态中，进入酒楼希望得到安顿，通过“废园雪景图”构建起想象性的自足空间。随后吕纬甫所讲的迁坟和送花的故事，宣告启蒙理想的破碎和自我的虚无。鲁迅借吕纬甫与“我”的对话，试图修复个体记忆，化解思想矛盾，但这种自反性叙事并不能解决主体分裂的难题，最终他通过直面现实寻找自我安顿的可能。
