Since the Sui and Tang dynasties, many official histories of different dynasties have compiled a chapter on elections to record the system of imperial civil service examinations and the methods of selection for a generation. Even though the Jin and Yuan dynasties were established by ethnic minorities, they were no exception. While adhering to the precedents set by their predecessors, the compilation of their "Xuan Ju Zhi" also underwent some changes, presenting a unique form.

Due to the close completion time of the official histories of the Song, Jin, and Yuan dynasties, both the "Jin Shi" and "Song Shi" were even compiled by scholars of the Yuan Dynasty, with a gap of one year between their completion. So there is a mutual inheritance and innovation in the compilation structure and format of the "Xuan Ju Zhi" of the official histories of the Song, Jin, and Yuan dynasties, and these three have a close connection in the compilation relationship. By carefully sorting out and comparing the content and structure of the "Xuan Ju Zhi" of the official histories of the Song, Jin, and Yuan dynasties, this paper investigates the sources of historical materials for their compilation, and explores the relationship between them in terms of inheritance and innovation in compilation.

Compared to the Jin Dynasty's rulers' emphasis on the imperial examination system and the significant role that selecting officials through imperial examinations played in the Jin people's entry into the imperial court, the Yuan Dynasty, upon its establishment, saw a long-term suspension of the imperial examination system by the rulers, with no exams held for a considerable period. Due to this situation in the Yuan Dynasty, obtaining official positions through becoming government clerks gradually became the primary path for educated individuals to enter officialdom in the Yuan Dynasty. Even after the reinstatement of the imperial examinations, this phenomenon remained unchanged. During this period, the school education system gradually became independent from the imperial examination system, no longer aiming to cultivate talent specifically for the exams. Instead, direct selection through schools became one of the direct pathways for educated individuals in the Yuan Dynasty to obtain official positions as clerks. The transformation of the school system between the Jin and Yuan dynasties is reflected in both the content and structure of the "Xuan Ju Zhi" found in the official histories of the two dynasties. Compared to the "Xuan Ju Zhi" in the official history of the Jin Dynasty, the content related to the "school system" in the "Xuan Ju Zhi" of the official history of the Yuan Dynasty is separately listed, detached from the earlier sections dealing with the subjects of the imperial examinations. This phenomenon underscores the significant influence of the institutional changes between the Jin and Yuan dynasties on the compilation of their respective official histories.
