Known as the spokesman of the Jazz Age, Francis Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940) is one of the most famous American writers in early 20th century. The Great Gatsby, his masterpiece, is considered an American classic. On the surface, the novel introduces a romantic tragedy, but in fact it reflects different views of professional women’s life, love and different attitudes toward ethical standards during the 1920s in American society. It is easy for the readers to feel Fitzgerald’s negative attitude and prejudice toward women by negatively portrayed women images. This paper is going to discuss the injustice on women Fitzgerald creates in this novel by analyzing the female images like Daisy,Jordan and Myrtle.Re-reading from Friedan’s feminist point and Maslow’s hierarchy of need,it is helpful to avoid the prejudice on women images and fully understand their suffer in the male-dominated society. The thesis consists of the introduction, two main chapters and conclusion. Chapter one is the introduction part which introduces Fitzgerald and The Great Gatsby. Chapter two a summary of the previous critical reviews on The Great Gatsby. Chapter three is a textual analysis from the perspective of Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique and Maslow’s hierarchy of need and also analyze the deep reasons for their tragedy. The last part draws a holistic conclusion of the whole thesis that the women characters is out of only being housewives and seeking for inner needs. |
