As common riding animals with symbolic meanings in daily life, horses and donkeys are often used by poets in their writing and expression. In this paper, we start from the use of two kinds of riding imagery in Lu You's poems, namely, "riding a horse" and "riding a donkey", and read, sort out and analyze the related poems, pointing out the focus of the use of these two kinds of riding imagery, the connotations contained in them, and their artistic characteristics. In Lu You's poems, the two kinds of riding imagery, "riding a horse" and "riding a donkey", are categorized as descriptive and symbolic, which show a contrast between riding a "steed" or a "wonted horse" and "riding a donkey" in different moods, symbolizing the political background of the country and the poet's identity. In terms of emotional expression, it conveys three states of patriotism and sadness, serenity and freedom, and clarity of mind. In terms of artistic features, the language of the poems related to Lu You's use of this two kinds of riding imagery is natural and colloquial, presenting the ideological characteristics of the fusion of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, as well as the writing techniques of scenario blending and combining the real and the imaginary. |
