Employment anxiety refers to the uneasiness, worry and stress that individuals feel when facing choices and future career directions. Past studies have shown that excessive employment anxiety can make it difficult for college students to concentrate on employment-related issues, preventing them from fully utilizing their employability. This will not only reduce their employment quality, but also may cause college students to develop problems such as self-denial and depression, which seriously jeopardize their physical and mental health. And discrimination perception, as a kind of individual's perception that he or she and the group he or she belongs to have been negatively evaluated or unfairly treated from the outside world, is also an important source of influence on mental health, which will, to a certain extent, have an impact on the employment anxiety of part-time postgraduates, a special group of postgraduates. This paper takes relative deprivation and core self-evaluation as mediating variables to explore how the level of discrimination perception has an impact on the employment anxiety of part-time graduate students, and whether relative deprivation and core self-evaluation play the role of chain mediation in it.
This paper adopts the research method of questionnaire survey, using the mature scales developed by previous researchers, the Perception of Discrimination in Employment Scale for Part-time Graduate Students, the Relative Deprivation Sense Scale, the Core Self-Esteem Scale, as well as the Master's Degree Graduate Students Employment Anxiety Questionnaire to 326 part-time graduate students nationwide, and utilizes the statistical method to investigate the psychological health status of part-time graduate students by using the recovered data with the test of the hypothesized model, and finally the research conclusions are as follows:
(1)Part-time graduate students' perceptions of discrimination as well as the total scores of relative deprivation and employment anxiety show extremely high levels, and part-time graduate students' core self-evaluation shows medium levels.
(2)Part-time graduate students' discrimination perceptions have significant differences in the variables of discipline category, gender and whether they are in the workforce; part-time graduate students' employment anxiety has significant differences in gender and whether they are in the workforce; part-time graduate students' relative deprivation has significant differences in the variables of gender and discipline category; part-time graduate students' core self-evaluation has significant differences in the variables of gender and whether they are in the workforce.
(3)Part-time graduate students' discrimination perceptions significantly and positively affect employment anxiety.
(4)Relative deprivation presents a partial mediating role in discrimination perception and employment anxiety of part-time graduate students, core self-evaluation presents a partial mediating role in discrimination perception and employment anxiety of part-time graduate students, and the chain mediation model of discrimination perception-relative deprivation-core self-evaluation-employment anxiety is established.
Based on the above findings, it is concluded that the higher the discrimination perception, the stronger the sense of relative deprivation, and the lower the core self-evaluation, which in turn affects the elevation of employment anxiety of part-time graduate students. Based on the above conclusions, this study puts forward a number of suggestions to strengthen the policy regulation and change the individual's mindset from both the social and individual perspectives, so as to reduce the employment anxiety of part-time graduate students, a special group, and to maintain a good level of mental health.
