Previous studies have proven that fear of missing out (FoMO) is a key motivation for users engaging with mobile social media. However, litter is known about the role of individual difference in shaping the relationship between FoMO and the mobile social media use. Therefore, this study aims to explore the impact and mechanism of the relationship between FoMO and the mobile social media use, specifically examining the perspective of the self-construal and self-extension.

A sample of 834 college students were recruited for the study to complete a battery of self-report questionnaires measuring their FoMO, self-extension via smartphone, self-construal and mobile social media use. The results showed that: (1) FoMO can positively predict the mobile social media use. (2) This relationship was moderated by the interdependent self-construal. For individuals with a low level of interdependent self-construal, FoMO had a greater impact on mobile social media use. (3) This relationship was moderated by the independent self-construal self-construal. For individuals with a low level of independent self-construal, FoMO also had a greater impact on mobile social media use. (4) The moderating effects of the two self-construals showed a cumulative effect, that was, the predictive effect of FoMO on mobile social media use among individuals with high independent and high interdependent self-construal was significantly weaker than that for other types of individuals. (5) The moderating effect of the interdependent self-construal and three-way interaction effect were both mediated by self-expansion via smartphone.

The present study reveals the significant influence of self-related factors on the relationship between FoMO and mobile social media use. The results offer valuable insights for interventions designed to alleviate negatively motivated mobile social media use among college students.
