Interracial dating and marriage remain hot topics in today’s globalised, migratory society. While in some parts of the world like Europe and North America, these issues have been heavily discussed, researched and debated (Trego 2005; Oyserman and Swim 2008; Williams 2010), it is less so the case in China, a country very much in the spotlight for its large population and fascinating development story. More and more individuals have decided to China hoping to exploit the various opportunities here, and one such group are the Africans. While Sino-African ties were established centuries ago, a recent spike of African migration to the southern part of the Middle Kingdom has ignited researchers' interest in the relationship between the African continent and China. (Le Bail 2008; Bodomo 2008; 2009) Despite the official cooperation and friendship between China and Africa, racial attitudes towards "hei ren" migrating to the Middle Kingdom can be perceived as discriminatory in terms of beliefs held and subsequent treatment meted out by Chinese. (Shen 2009) In light of this perceived discrimination, the researcher has aimed to focus on intimate relationships between Africans and Chinese, with special emphasis on stigma management strategies of African males in long-term romantic relationships with Chinese women. Based on interviews collected over a six-week period in three bustling African enclaves in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, the researcher will examine strategies of Africans when dealing with perceived stigma from their partner's family as well as from the general public. Further to this point, the assistance of the Chinese partner in handling perceived discrimination will be examined as well. The study is relevant in both understanding how Africans understand and interpret their lived experiences in China at both a micro and macro level, as well as examining how this migratory phenomenon can help to change Chinese attitudes on Africans.
