The Handmaid’s Tale and The Testaments are two dystopian novels by Margaret Atwood, both set in Gilead, a strongly patriarchal, totalitarian theonomic state, where women are subjugated and suppressed. As the protagonist of The Handmaid’s Tale, Offred has long been a controversial character, with scholars arguing whether a coward or rebel she should be treated as, and the same fate is also met by Aunt Lydia, the protagonist of The Testaments. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the two characters’ resistance and complicity in these two novels. After a comparative analysis and by using complicity theories, this thesis comes to the conclusion that Offred, though has been making tiny moves against Gilead’s will or laws, has taken no overt action that would hinder Gilead’s operation, while Aunt Lydia, though has been compromised with Gilead, is truly an anti-Gilead hero that managed to bring destruction to the regime.
