The interference of the original family to the husband and wife after marriage has become a fairly common social phenomenon in China, and the interference of the original family may have a negative impact on the stability of marriage. However, the mechanism of influence is still unclear. With the increase of the age of marriage, the interference of the original family is weakening. And it is necessary to explore whether the mechanism of the influence of the original family intervention on the stability of marriage in different marriage ages is consistent. Therefore, it is of great clinical significance to explore the influence of original family interference on the stability of marriage in different marriage ages, and it is helpful to design an intervention program for couples of certain ages of marriage that affect the stability of marriage due to the issue of the interference from family of origin. The data used in this study came from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) project “The relationship between the marital interaction with marital quality and stability”, which was hosted by Professor Fang Xiaoyi. A total of 313 valid couples were recruited:123 newlywed couples, 91 parents of babies, 99 parents of preschool children, mainly from Beijing and Tianjin. Both spouses filled out independently: demographic variables questionnaire, family of origin interference questionnaire, Quality of Marriage Index and Marital Instability Scale-Short Form. The purpose of this study is to describe the status and characteristics of original family interference in different marriage ages. The effects of different aspects of original family interference (family life interference and individual life interference) on marital stability and the mediating role of marital quality, as well as the consistency of impact and mechanism in different marriage ages. The main findings of the study are as follows: (1) Among the parents of infants and the parents of preschool children, the family life interference perceived by the husband and wife is significantly higher than the interference of individual life. Among newlywed couples, only the family life interference perceived by the wife is significantly higher than the interference of individual life. (2) In terms of the total score of original family interference, for husbands, there is no significant difference among the three marriage age groups; for wives, the wives at the stage of infant parents perceive significantly higher interference from the original family than the other two marriage age groups. In addition, except for newlywed couples, both the infant parents and the parents of preschool children perceive significantly higher levels of original family interference than their husbands. (3) Family life interference perceived by husbands negatively predicts their marital stability, while that perceived by wives negatively predicts their marital stability and spouse's marital stability. Wives' perceived interference in family life at the stage of newlyweds and infants' parents negatively predicted marital stability of themselves and spouses; husbands' perceived interference in family life at the stage of infants' parents negatively predicted marital stability of themselves; wives' perceived interference in individual life at the stage of preschool children negatively predicted marital stability of spouses. (4) The marital quality of the husband plays a completely mediating role between the interference of the original family perceived by the husband in family life and the marital stability of himself or his spouse; the marital quality of the husband or wife plays a completely mediating role between the interference of the original family perceived by the wife in family life and the marital stability of the husband; the marital quality of the wife or husband plays a completely mediating role in the interference of the original family perceived by the wife in family life; and the quality of the wife’s or husband’s marriage has a partial mediation between the wife’s perception of the original family’s interference in family life and the stability of her own marriage. Further comparing the models of the three marriage ages, there is no significant path in the parents of preschool children. The difference between the two marriage ages of newly married couples and infant parents is that the interference of the original family perceived by the husband of the parents of babies affects the marital stability of the husband through the marital quality of the husband; in the newlyweds, the indirect effect is not significant. The interference of the original family to family life perceived by the wives of infant parents affects the marital stability of the wives through their marital quality, but the indirect effect is not significant in the newlywed couples.
