Social media is a platform where human engage in socializing and sharing experiences. The society and media environments interpenetrate each other, and in the process of creating and sharing, new languages are born along with new technologies. Social media affects people's social behavior both online and offline, which in turn affects social elements such as information dissemination and language culture.

Starting from Catford's translation shifts theory, this report takes the translation practice project The Chaos Machine: The Inside Story of How Social Media Rewired Our Minds and Our World chapter one. The report focuses on analyzing how the shifts of language structure from the original text to the translated text is realized and exploring the translation strategies of text under social media and Internet background. This translation practice report is divided into four parts, including introduction, translation process, translation shifts theory and relevant case study, and summary. The first part introduces the background of the translation practice report, and elaborates the purpose and significance of the study. The second chapter includes pre-translation preparation, translation process and post-translation review. Chapter three contains an overview of translation shifts theory and relevant case studies. The application of translation shifts theory is discussed in the context of the previous analysis of text characteristics, from the three major difficulties: culture-loaded words, rhetorical techniques and translation of long and difficult sentences. These are all applied to hierarchical and category shifts, specifically including the shifts of lexical and grammatical tenses of different parts of speech, the shifts of subject and theme prominence, active and passive voice; in addition, the translation analysis of culture-loaded words also discusses cultural shifts to a certain extent. The fourth chapter is a summary of translation practice, summarizing the shortcomings, improvement methods and reflective outlook in the translation process.

After analyzing, the author concludes that for culture-loaded words, the translation could mainly applies shifts of singular and plural forms, clauses and phrases, and also combines the social media and network background to select the equivalence domain of to realize cultural shift. For the translation of rhetorical techniques, unit shifts and structure shifts are realized mainly by translating phrases into sentences, adjusting the subject and theme prominence, and converting the subject-passive voice. As for the translation of long and difficult sentences, the language structure of the original text is appropriately adjusted and reorganized, such as the shifts of tenses, affirmation and negation, in order to adapt to the language structure of the translated language and form a readable translation.
