The book of Genesis is the very first part of the Holy Bible, which tells the stories about God’s creation of the universe and the early patriarchs of ancient Israelites. It is not only an important part of Judaism scripture and one of the foundations of Hebrew culture, but also the canonical part of Christianity, exerting significant influence on western religion, culture, and ideology as well as other social and ideological scopes. This dissertation is to focus on the book of Genesis, making a profound and analytical research from the perspective of a woman, in the purpose of revealing the sexual ideology and sub-texts about women in Genesis narrative as well as searching for the undeniable historical status of ancient Israelite women and the contribution of them under the patriarchal social framework. This dissertation is divided into four chapters. The first chapter examines the patriarchal narrative strategy in the book of Genesis. The narration in Genesis is under the name of the God, thus to achieve a transcendental truth claim from the mythical and legendary stories. However, what’s behind the words of God is the rhetorical devises of human languages; what’s upon the historicized background are the stories told by male human authors; and what’s presented in the seemingly traditional and objective criticism throughout thousands of years is the truth of sexual discrimination. The second chapter focuses on the creation stories in the first three chapters of Genesis. It analyses in the first place the metaphorical meanings of forbidden tree, snake and woman in Genesis, and other key elements in creation stories. After that, the original form of binary opposition is revealed, on which basis, the chapter points out that the creation story is not only about the creation of the universe, but also a creation of hierarchy and order between human beings and nature as well as man and woman. The creation story traces the origin of human violation of God’s will to woman and the pagan worship of goddess’ sexuality and fertility. At the same time, a crime and punishment logic which involves God’s words helps to explain the objective existence of death, women’s giving birth to babies and the crawling of the snake. This in turn adds more justification to woman’s inferiority. The third and fourth chapters target on the early patriarch stories of ancient Israel from the 12th chapter of Genesis onwards. Chapter Three mainly discusses the social identity of women including mother, wife, daughter and women of pagan belief. The book of Genesis regulates the social functions and identities of women via its narrative: being a mother is the common wish of every woman, but whether a wife can give birth to a son depends on her merit, and more importantly, on God’s will; as a wife, she must obey her husband and to sacrifice herself for her husband’s interest and needs at any time; as a daughter, she is the private property of her father, and becomes a wife through the father’s exchange and business-like negotiation with the future husband; a daughter should be strictly confined to her living space, any attempt and action of stepping beyond leads to disastrous end. In the fourth chapter, this dissertation reveals the sub-texts about women. Though under the mainstream patriarchal narrative framework, there are still traces to see the efforts women made to withhold their own power and interest, some are even desperate. From the fissures and gaps of the text, we can have a glimpse of their action, catch a sound of their voice, hear their understanding of the divine and witness their special contribution to theology. Still, under the pressure of the patriarchy, their actions are covert and even distorted, their voices are ambiguous and bring forth multiple echoes, and their religious attitude and understanding are not recognized and taken seriously, but their contribution and value in history and theology can never be wiped out. After a questioning of the ultimate meanings of traditional mainstream interpretation of the book of Genesis, this dissertation is going to construct a multiple and multi-layered reading of it from a woman’s perspective, to reveal the sexual politics and patriarchal ideology of the book of Genesis and to show the possibility of reading from other perspectives.
