外文摘要:
The study aims at assessing the ‘Power to Women’ program and evaluate whether it has achieve the goals of promoting women’s participation in governance in the Eastern Province of Sierra Leone. For this purpose, the study uses both the quantitative and qualitative research methods to gather the required data through sample survey questionnaire administration. The study also provides explanations from the theoretical aspect of other writers. Key findings from the study shows that the ‘Power to women’ program has to some extent helped in promoting women’s participation in governance in the region. The study also highlights the major reactions to the training and the roles the women now plays in their various communities, which includes: advocacy; assuming leadership roles; bringing other women on board; increased awareness on their rights and consultation with government stakeholders on policies and programs favourable to them; among others. Promoting women’s participation in governance is an ongoing process that needs constant advocacy and lobbying worldwide in order to achieve equal opportunities for female representation in all spheres of decision making. The researcher identifies key policy implications for government and stakeholders which includes: extending the program to include other regions in the North, South and Western areas in order to have a positive spillover effect on the entire country; a preliminary class should be initiated on political participation training that is geared towards building a strong positive perception of women on the essence of participation in governance; organizing monthly internship programs to evaluate the reactions to the training by participants to further enhance sustainable participatory efforts, among other.
