With global warming, the accelerated melting of the Greenland ice sheet has attracted much attention from the scientific community. This study focuses on the influence of meltwater from the Greenland Ice Sheet on the North Atlantic Meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) and its possible changes in the global climate system. In this study, enhanced Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) tests were used to identify abrupt climate changes in different climate records and compare them with reconstructed ice sheet changes from 80,000 years ago. On this basis, this study discusses the correspondence between modern carbon dioxide and changes in Greenland ice Sheet meltwater, and further understands the possible connection between the two and AMOC. Based on a systematic analysis of historical and modern data on Greenland ice Sheet meltwater processes, combined with existing climate modeling results, the specific effects of increased Greenland ice sheet meltwater on AMOC activities are initially assessed. We believe that although some studies have concluded that meltwater from Greenland ice sheet will lead to the desalination of surface seawater in the North Atlantic Ocean and restrain the formation of deep water in the North Atlantic Ocean, which may lead to the weakening of AMOC intensity, due to the complexity of the Earth system, meltwater from Greenland ice sheet is not the whole reason for the change of AMOC. This study provides a new perspective for understanding the impact of global warming on the polar ice-ocean-atmosphere system, and has important scientific significance for in-depth understanding of future polar climate and environmental changes. |
