The source text for this report is the self-help psychology book Reframe Your Brain-The User Interface for Happiness and Success by American author Scott Adams. Using Catford’s translation shifts theory, the article studied the challenges encountered during the translation process of self-help psychology books and the difficulties in translating illustrations, using specific examples and illustrations to illustrate the application of translation shifts theory in the translation process.

Translation shifts theory includes level shifts and category shifts, and this paper mainly focuses on using category shifts in translating self-help psychology books. Considering the linguistic features of such texts, this report utilized structural shifts, class shifts, unit shifts, and intra-system shifts to address the challenges in translating from English to Chinese. The translator needs to shift negations into affirmations, nouns into verbs, and phrases or clauses into complete sentences or main clauses, and interpret the deeper meanings of words and phrases to align with Chinese language conventions.

This report also examines the translation of illustrations in self-help psychology books, using translation shifts theory to connect the purpose and context of the illustrations. This report proposes intersemiotic shifts, requiring the translator to analyze the intersemiotic meaning of illustrations and reflect the underlying logical relationships in translations. This enables readers to grasp the main ideas of the illustrations better and demonstrates the necessity of adapting to cultural and contextual differences.
