Environment and character novels are typical of Hardy’s novels, while nature and women are the themes of Tess of the d'Urbervilles.

Tess of the d'Urbervilles is a long novel written by Hardy, in which Tess, the heroine, is oppressed by capitalist class and patriarchal society, and ends miserably due to the destiny and her own characteristics. This paper analyzes Tess’s predicament under social oppression, her behaviors and the causes of her tragedy from the perspective of ecological feminism. It also discusses the close relationship between Tess and nature and the incompatibility between Tess and the society, thus to highlight the awakening of ecological female consciousness. |
