文人拟话本小说不同于说书艺术与戏曲表演，其更强调案头化阅读效果的文本性必然使拟话本的入话具有一定的独特性。而从说书艺术到小说文本，从话本到拟话本，入话这一体制在“三言”中才真正予以确立与规范，进而影响到之后产生的拟话本小说，并最终成为中国古代白话短篇小说的固定程式。入话对正话的叙事到底产生了怎样的影响，对整个文本的叙事究竟产生了怎样的效果——这一问题也从“三言”开始，贯穿了整个拟话本小说的叙事历史。作为文本的有机组成部分，“三言”的入话不仅有助于表现主题，而且有利于控制叙述（叙述者使用入话承担表意功能，有时进而通过入话与文本其他部分的连接，构成一个有效的意义系统）；不仅呈现了叙述者的教化态度和娱乐倾向，利用因果报应或虚幻情节等手段，表达出一种寓教于乐的权衡，而且以诗词为载体，体现出叙述者有意提升小说审美品位的雅化意图；不仅以布景形式或入话与正话之间的过渡语句发挥导读作用，而且以其独特的预叙特质，把握读者的阅读兴趣；同时以类比、错位等手段拓展文本内涵，呈现文本的结构深意。总而言之，入话作为中国古代白话短篇小说的固定程式之一，反映出中国古代文学叙事的特质与倾向，具有独特的艺术价值。
