Frankenstein is a classic novel in 19th century, which is also known as the first science fiction in English literature. This thesis is going to analyze the characters and the theme of this novel from the perspective of the depictions of the sublime scenes. The sublime is an aesthetic concept originally proposed by ancient Creek critic Longinus and further elaborated by Edmund Burke and Immanuel Kant. Different from the concept of beauty which gives people direct enjoyment, the sublime arouses a sense of horror and admiration by great vastness, obscurity or unfamiliar power. There are many natural sublime settings in Frankenstein, such as the thunder storm in the mountains, the solemnly quiet cemetery, the precipitous escarpment. All of these natural settings not only intensify the environmental atmosphere but also impose profound effects on the main character Victor Frankenstein in his different stages of life. In the meantime, the depictions of the monster in this novel, including his ugly appearance, aberrant body and overwhelming power, also create various layers of sublime effects. From this perspective, this thesis interprets the author’s hidden intent in portraying Victor Frankenstein and the monster behind those passages of sublimity. The results of the analysis enrich the study of the function of the sublime in literary work. |
