1930年代，以上海为首的城市中，越来越多的西式时装摆上货架，舆论开始了对女性着“奇装异服”进入公共空间的讨论。1934－1937年，国民政府推行“新生活运动”，各地推行取缔妇女奇装异服的政策，使讨论进入白热化。妇女着“奇装异服”这一社会事件涉及1930年代社会的主要矛盾与议题，本文通过对各大报刊杂志中的舆论进行分析，认为舆论对此类服装以及服装的消费者——摩登女性大多呈反对态度，但批评者的论证逻辑反映出帝制时代的旧道德、旧伦理体系在此时已经被社会抛弃，民族主义的价值超越了传统社会的价值，成为批评者的首要考量；同时，激进与温和的评论都带有对女性群体的偏见与打压。少数为“奇装异服”辩护的声音反映出1930年代个人权利、女性权利意识在大众间有所传播。批评者与辩护者声音的对撞展现出此时社会、文化、政治的多元面貌。

As more and more Western fashions hit the shelves in cities such as Shanghai in 1930s, a public debate on women wearing 'outlandish dresses' arose. In 1934-1937, the Nationalist government of the Republic of China launched the "New Life Movement", a policy to outlaw women's outlandish dress, which led to a heated debate. This social event of women in "outlandish dress" related to main social conflicts and issues of the 1930s, and through an analysis of public opinion in major newspapers and magazines, this article argues that public opinion was mostly opposed to outlandish dress and its consumers, modern women. However, the argumentation of the critics discloses the fact that the old moral and ethical system of the imperial era had been abandoned by society at this time, and that nationalist values had overtaken traditional social values as the primary consideration of the critics; at the same time, both radical and moderate comments were prejudiced against and suppressed the female community. The few voices defending 'outlandish dress' reflect the spread of a sense of individual rights and women's rights among the general public in the 1930s. The clash between the voices of critics and defenders give us a sight of the social, cultural and political diversity of the period.
