The 2016 US Presidential Election primaries Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton have different speech styles, which to a large extent affects the result of the election. The styles of candidacy announcement speeches of the two party nominees are therefore studied. A close stylistic analysis is carried out at the lexical level, the grammatical level and the semantic level of the texts. Linguistic softwares such as Wordsmith, the Readability Test Tool and UAM Corpus Tool are used to help with data collection and analysis. Through a thorough analysis of lexical complexity, lexical formality and personal pronouns at the lexical level, sentence length, sentence type, transitivity type, repetition and parallelism at the grammatical level and hyperbole, semantic incoherence at the semantic level, Hillary Clinton’s speech style is found to be a typical political public speech which is formal, complex, motivating and well rehearsed, picturing herself as a capable political elite who concerns for the well-being of all Americans. In contrast, Donald Trump’s speech style is more conversational, informal and simple, framing himself as a political outsider and a politically incorrect guy who is relatable to the audience. Another feature of Donald Trump’s speech style is the populist rhetoric such as exaggerated facts, allegation of international conspiracy and the representation of himself as the only one that can save the country.
