Today, with the popularity of the Internet, the widespread use of social media has become one of the main channels for college students to socialize and obtain information. The popularity of social media has brought a lot of convenience to college students' lives, but it has also brought some psychological problems. Therefore, research on social media use and mental health of college students is becoming increasingly important. This paper deeply discusses the impact of social media use on college students' mental health and its internal mechanism, puts forward social support as an intermediary variable and social comparison tendency as a moderating variable, builds a mechanism model of social media use's impact on mental health, and then conducts an empirical study on college students by means of questionnaire survey. Taking college students' social media users as the research object, this study conducted a questionnaire survey on the use of social media, social support, comparison tendency and mental health of 720 college students with different ages, genders, education levels and majors. SPSS26.0 and PROCESS plug-in were used for statistical analysis of the recovered 709 valid samples. The results are as follows: First, the participants' intensity of social media use, social support, and social comparison were above average, as well as their depression, anxiety, and life satisfaction. Second, by examining the differences in variables such as gender, age, education level, and major, it can be concluded that only gender has significant differences in the intensity of social media use; There are no significant differences in social support and social comparison tendency based on gender, age, education level, and major. However, age does show significant differences in depression and anxiety, while no significant difference is observed in life satisfaction.Gender, education level, and major do not show significant differences in depression, anxiety, and life satisfaction. Third, social media use intensity, social support, social comparison tendency, and depression were significantly positively correlated. Intensity of social media use, social support, social comparison tendency, and anxiety were significantly positively correlated. Intensity of social media use, social support, social comparison tendency, and life satisfaction were significantly positively correlated. Fourth, the intensity of social media use has a significant positive impact on depression, anxiety and life satisfaction. Fifth, social support plays a mediating role between wechat use intensity, depression, anxiety, and life satisfaction, and social comparison moderates the mediating role of social support. Accordingly, this study presents three suggestions for effectively mitigating the negative effects of social media use on college students' mental health. The first is through social media college student mental health outreach and education; Another is creating the perfect social support network; Third, watch and use social comparison well. |
