The zoot suit is a draped suit that sprouted out of the Great Depression, and was both a beloved performance outfit for jazz musicians and a trigger for riots. In the 1940s, the zoot suit became a fashionable garment that took the United States by storm, with significant numbers of zoot suit fans among African Americans, Mexican Americans, Japanese Americans, and other minorities. In the process of zoot suit's growing popularity, it has gradually transformed from a mere fashion symbol into a symbol of resistance. The resistance that is diversified, with class, race, gender, and even intergenerational oppression being the objects of resistance. Through the process of transmutation of the symbolism of the zoot suit, this paper explores the social problems that were obscured by the grand narratives of the Great Depression and World War II, and the reasons why the zoot suit has been constructed as an embodied spirit of resistance.
