The method of correlation is the methodology of Tillich’s systematic theology, and has a wide range of influences on the development of contemporary Christian theology. The formation of the method of correlation is inseparable from Tillich’s life experiences, academic origins, and theoretical thinking.

The text on which this study mainly relies is “The Method of Correlation” in Tillich’s Systematic Theology (Vol.1). In this text, Tillich mainly explains in terms of three aspects: his thinking on the method itself, the specific connotation of the correlation method, and other theological methods overcome by the method of correlation. On the basis of sorting out and analyzing the text, this study attempts to reconstruct the argument, trace its fundamental questions, and pay attention to its application in Tillich’s Systematic Theology (Vol.1).

In addition, based on the existing research literature, this study presents the possible theoretical dilemma of the correlation method, and responds to it from the standpoint of Tillich. Finally, by considering the method of correlation, we can envision a theology that
emphasizes the dimensions of despair and prayer.
