This paper focuses on chayidian and its expletive negation format chayidian mei VP. It analyzes the semantic features of the adverbial chayidian, the expletive negation mei, and the subjective mood of the formats of chayidian, including chayidian VP, chayidian mei VP (canonical negation and expletive negation), and chayidian jiu VP. The main conclusions of this paper are as follows: The objective semantics of chayidian include approximation and negation, and the assertion of chayidian is their logical conjunction. The negative meaning is implicit, and approximation is the explicit semantics. The expletive negation word mei is a highly subjective component that does not contain negative meaning. Its main function is to enhance the subjective mood of the sentence, and in this respect, it is similar to model adverbs. The formats of chayidian mainly have three subjective moods: rejoicing, surprise, and regret, and the compatibility range of each format is different. Their distribution pattern can reflect the shortcomings of an interpretation of chayidian mei VP, where the speaker’s desire is to distinguish between the two formats. This may be helpful for constructing the semantic interpretation rule of it.
