The Correlation between Vocalizations and Birth Weight of Giant Panda Twin Neonates

Due to limited time and energy, giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) selectively choose their twin neonates based on weight, which can be evaluated as an important indicator of animal growth, development, and health status. The vocalizations of giant panda neonates can also reflect their status and health conditions. In order to investigate the correlation between the vocal parameters of giant panda neonates and their weight, this study selected 8 pairs of 16 giant panda twin neonates as the research objects. Firstly, all vocal parameters and birth weight were subjected to correlation analysis, screening out the parameters significantly related to weight, and further conducting the inter-individual differences analysis of the selected parameters between twin neonates, and finally verifying whether these parameters can be used to judge weight. The results showed that the Tend, F0 start, Peak ampl, and Q25 of the squawk type, as well as the Peak ampl of the scream type, were significantly correlated with weight (P<0.05), and there were significant differences between twin neonates (P<0.05). Among them, the Tend of the squawk type was more reflective of weight, and as Tend increased, so did weight. The study concluded that the Tend of the squawk vocalization can be used to judge the weight of giant panda cubs. The results of this study provide theoretical support for the breeding of captive giant pandas.
