本文通过分析《法国中尉的女人》的叙述策略,探究女主人公萨拉的宗教信仰是如何被塑造的?小说对萨拉信仰的描述主要通过波尔坦尼太太?安德克里夫其他居民(包括葛洛根医生与查尔斯)?叙述者的视角来实现?本文通过文本分析,总结出这三个视角中萨拉的宗教形象,并发现三个视角下得出的结果是互相矛盾的?紧接着本文对造成这种矛盾的原因进行阐述,认为其根本在于该小说在叙事层面上的特殊手法?一方面由于多视角叙事中各个视角人物的视界受限,信息不全存在偏见,无法得出关于萨拉宗教信仰的真相;另一方面叙事者介入叙事过程并对叙事层面做出评价,模糊了现实与虚拟的边界,解构了小说前期通过多视角对萨拉宗教信仰的塑造,使得关于萨拉信仰的真相沦为不可知?本文进一步指出,这种入侵式叙事的手法与前期逼真还原维多利亚时代风貌的描述相结合,不仅完成了对小说文本虚拟性的指涉,甚至因其前期对官方维多利亚叙事的戏仿,更进一步完成了对历史虚构性的指涉? |

By analyzing the narrative strategy of The French Lieutenant’s Woman, this thesis explores how the religious beliefs of Sarah are shaped by John Fowles. The novel describes Sarah’s faith mainly through the perspectives of Mrs. Poulteney, other residents in Undercliff (Dr. Grogan and Charles for instance), and the narrator. Through textual analysis, this thesis tries to analyze the religious image of Sarah from three perspectives above, and finds that her religious views obtained from the three perspectives are contradictory. Then the cause of this contradiction is elaborated that is the novel’s special narrative techniques. On the one hand, the truth about Sarah’s religious belief cannot be obtained due to the limited vision of the characters in the multi-perspective narrative and the incomplete information and prejudice. On the other hand, the intrusion of the narrator and its comments on the narrative form blurs the boundary between reality and fiction, and deconstructs Sarah’s religious beliefs which are constructed through the multiple perspectives, making the truth about Sarah’s beliefs become unknowable. After that, this thesis further points out that the combination of parody of the realist narrative with the intrusion of the narrator, not only reveals the fictionality of the novel but also implies the fictionality of the real history.
