阿瑟•韦利(Arthur Waley, 1889-1962)是二十世纪英国最重要的东方学家之一,也是西方世界研究成果极为突出的东方学家之一。本文主要围绕阿瑟•韦利与中国文学,阿瑟•韦利与日本文学等的翻译研究展开。从韦利对中国诗人李白的评述策略、对中国古典诗歌的归纳总结入手,梳理韦利对中国古典文学文化的认识观和译介方法;从韦利对《源氏物语》的翻译策略入手,分析韦利针对东方传统文化预设时的翻译特点,归纳其独特的翻译原则,进而挖掘其中所包含的韦利的东方观。绪论由两部分组成。首先是对东方学及相关定义概念的划分和梳理。立足于日渐完善的东方学学科建立,吸收导师东方学研究的最新成果,基本明确了本文所考察和使用概念的学术范围。其次是指出确定阿瑟•韦利为研究对象,是根据导师长期以来东方学研究成果的必然选择,是东方学研究的补充。明确本次论文研究的方向和重点,是系列研究的一部分。第一章立足于阿瑟•韦利与中国文学。选取阿瑟•韦利对中国唐代诗人李白作品的翻译及其评传,同时参考其对中国古典诗歌的认识,依托《诗人李白》(The Poet Li Po)、《李白的诗与生平》(The Poetry and Career of Li Po)、《170首中国诗》(A Hundred and Seventy Chinese Poems)等相关文献资料,通过比较阿瑟•韦利在李白评传中塑造的李白形象与西方原有李白形象的不同,厘清韦利对李白的情感态度及文化误读,梳理引发此类误读的主要原因。同时总结阿瑟•韦利针对中国古典诗歌的主要看法,整理明确其中的跨文化差异。第二章探讨阿瑟•韦利与日本文学。阿瑟•韦利的《源氏物语》译本,在英语世界广为流传,集中体现了阿瑟•韦利在处理异文化传统预设时的翻译特点。参考阿瑟•韦利对自身翻译方法的相关介绍,本章将从言辞语句的选择入手,总结该译本突出的语言优美、表情顺畅等优势。以不译和歌、增删段落等为例,说明阿瑟•韦利在处理东方传统文化习俗时的两难态度,总结由此给译文文本造成的与原文的偏离性以及译文情节前后无法衔接的混乱性。同时参照二十世纪七十年代美国译者赛登斯蒂卡的译本,增强对比的生动性,更鲜明地突出研究对象的独特性。第三章廓清阿瑟•韦利的翻译原则和东方观。一方面立足于对译本原文的细读,另一方面则立足于理论论文,整理归纳出阿瑟•韦利主要的翻译观,即:译者应根据文本的不同特性选择不同语言;译者在使用自己最熟练的语言时,才能最好的展现文本;译介工作需要激情投入。梳理个人兴趣、社会生活背景以及政治环境大背景对阿瑟•韦利的影响,总结韦利以矛盾为主、受政治道德影响的东方观。

Arthur Waley(1889-1962)is one of the most important orientalists in British during the twentieth century. At the same time, he is also one of the orientalists in the western world who made great achievements about oriental studies. This paper mainly around the relationship between Arthur Waley and Chinese Literature, Arthur Waley and Japanese literature. Starting with the views Arthur Waley had about Chinese poet Li Po and Chinese classical poetry, try to card Waley’s view about Chinese classical culture and translation methods. Starting with the thoughts Waley had about The tale of Genji, analysis the characteristics of his translation, extract the principles Waley followed when he did the translation, sums up his oriental view.The introduction consists of two parts. First of all, sorting and partitioning the concepts which belong to Orientalism and which are going to be used in this paper. Benefited from the progress of the Oriental science, the paper defined the basic concepts and the basic academic scope. The second part of introduction is point out the main research object of this thesis. Propose the significance of the research, at the same time, summary the results of previous studies. Make the research direction of the paper clearly. The first chapter intend to clarify the reason why Waley had a misunderstand about Li Po by comparing the difference between images of Li Po. With the help of reading The Poet Li Po, The Poetry and Career of Li Po and A Hundred and Seventy Chinese Poems, also focus on Waley’s attitude towards to Chinese poetry.The second chapter focus on Arthur Waley’s translation of the Japanese literature Genjimonogatari( The Tale of Genji ). Summarize the outstanding beauty of the expression, try to explain why Arthur Waley had not translated the Waka and what confusions it leaded to. At the same time, referring to Edward G Seidensticker’s translation to enhance the vividness of the comparison.The third chapter will introduce the three important principles showed in Arthur Waley’s translation and articles. Through which try to summarize his oriental view showed words unconsciously.
