With the deepening of China’s open-up and entering into the WTO, cross-culture communication between our country and foreign countries is becoming more and more frequent and intimate and a great many foreigners come to China to live or visit. As an important part of culture, public signs are intended to give the audience or readers directions, information, or warnings. Thus, we cannot attach too much attention to the translation of public signs. In fact, the status quo of pubic signs translation is far from satisfactory, and there are many mistranslations. The translation of customer notice on tickets(including movie tickets, tickets for scenic spots and so on)is even worse and relative research is very scarce. Mistranslations not only hinder intercultural communication, but also greatly damage the image of our country. In such circumstances, the writer carries out his research.
In his research, the writer tries to explore the mistranslations from different aspects, such as grammar, punctuation, redundancy, Chinglish, word choice, capitalization and printing. On this basis, the witer refers to Yan Fu’s translation principles, Hans Vermeer’s Skopos Theory, Nida’s functional equivalence theory and Gudykunst’s Intercultural Communication Theory to give accurate translations.
This thesis consists of five parts: Part one introduces the motivation and objects of writing this paper and the organization of the paper. In part two, the writer has a review of relative research home and broad on translation and some guided methods about doing translation. Part three is a very general introduction about the characters of public signs and their translations. Part four is the most important part, in which the Chinese-English translation of customer notice on tickets is analyzed in detail from different aspects and proper translation versions are provided according to relative theories. Based on the analyses above, a brief conclusion is made and suggestions are given in part five.
