Data is collected through participant observation as well as through semi-structured interviews of the founders of the CIAA. Data analysis stretches beyond the scope of the main actors within the CIAA into a sphere representing over 1000 artists1, academics and activists in China.An analysis of group motivations is undertaken, which sheds light on how group members related to the ‘collective’ in which they were participating. A creative method at couching social movement theory within the surrounding sociopolitical context was employed. In this1The vast majority of the artists were connected through six weixin groups. Therefore, interaction between these artists as well as their interaction with the permanent members of the CIAA was primarily through weixin.format, a description of Societal, Political, Economic and Internal challenges became lenses from which models and concepts of social movement theory were observed and described. Findings suggest that individual motivations for joining and supporting the CIAA artist collective differ substantially. Although these differences have been reconcilable at the early stages of the organization’s development, they may have an impact in the growth of the organization. Nonetheless, data indicates that the political pressures faced by artists create a shared identity among CIAA participants and perhaps act as glue holding the collective together. Furthermore, four primary categories of challenges to organizational development are explored: Societal, Economic, Political and Internal. These categories did not occupy a separate space, and challenges faced by the organization and its members can be visualized as a complex network connecting each of the categories listed above.
