There is evidence for an association between genotype of Brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and personality traits, and association between serotonin transporter-linked promoter region (5-HTTLPR) gene polymorphism and personality traits, respectively. Recent findings have shown that interactions between allelic variants of the different genes may contribute to personality traits. We examined the effects of BDNF val66met and 5-HTTLPR polymorphisms for associations with the Temperament and Character Inventory-Revised version (TCI-R) in 447 Chinese college students. We found that the variants of BDNF influence the Harm Avoidance (HA) temperament subscale and Self directedness (SD) character subscale of TCI. And 5-HTTLPR polymorphism influence the HA and Persistence (PS) temperament subscales and SD character subscale of TCI. There is no interaction between the two genes in any subscale of TCI. Separating men and women apart, we found significant interactions between BDNF gene and 5-HTTLPR genes on Self directedness (SD) character subscales of TCI in female individuals. In the presence of the 5-HTTLPR l allele, subjects of group m of BDNF had a significantly higher SD score than those of group vv. These findings suggest that the variants of BDNF gene interacted with the 5-HTTLPR polymorphism to influence the SD character subscales of TCI, but only in female subjects.
