外文摘要:
The accepted method of student discipline in schools on the global front has shifted from corporal forms to non-corporal forms since the beginning of 1990. This change was necessitated due to the negative effects of corporal punishment on the developmental outcomes of students. Despite the global call to end the use of all forms of corporal punishment in school settings, some factors still impede this agenda. This study aimed to find out the attitude and experiences of teachers in terms of their mode of discipline but the survey object is teachers in public junior high schools in Ga-North Municipality of Ghana. The importance of carrying out this study lies in the fact that the ban on corporal punishment in Ghanaian schools is very recent. Teachers and school authorities have depended on corporal punishment for several decades and therefore, it is necessary to explore how these teachers are coping with the change and add their experiences as well as their attitudes to literature. Furthermore, the study adopted a mixed-method approach but with the quantitative aspect given more weight. 215 participants took part in the study with 202 teachers responding to the questionnaires whereas, the remaining 13 participants: 7 teachers and 6 students responded to interview questions by the researcher. The data analyses revealed that the majority of teachers are against the ban on corporal punishment in the school setting and their overall attitude towards corporal punishment is favorable resulting in the use of some forms of corporal punishment despite the ban. However, fifteen (15) non-corporal disciplinary methods are employed by the teachers to deal with students’ misbehaviors
