铜矿冶业是唐代社会经济的重要部门，与铸币等诸多经济活动关系密切。唐代铜矿冶业总体上分布广泛，在不同的时期呈现出不同的时空分布特征。唐代前期，矿冶业持续发展，并迎来一个繁盛期，南北方的铜矿冶业良好，总体上北方铜矿冶业的产量和规模处于优势。唐中后期，经济社会发生了诸多变化，影响了唐代中后期的铜矿冶业发展。安史乱后，唐代铜矿冶业生产受到打击，规模、产量明显下滑，进入了一段衰颓期。面对这一状况，政府大力推动铜矿冶业经济的恢复，使铜矿冶业生产出现了一段复苏的局面，但伴随唐末战乱，铜矿冶业又走向衰颓。与此同时，唐中后期的南方铜矿冶业逐渐居于优势地位。唐代铜矿冶业的发展与铸币和商品经济关系密切，发展很大程度上被铸币业推动，政府政策、政局与经济社会发展状况对铜矿冶业发展有着很大影响。
