Aristotle regards honor as the greatest external good, and when he discusses the classification of three kinds of life, he thinks that honor depends on the giver rather than the receiver. When discussing the virtue of magnanimity, we think that honor is the reward of virtue. Since honor is the reward of virtue, it should depend on the inner virtue of the recipient rather than the outer award of the giver. What does the source of honor depend on?Some scholars think that honor, as an external good, depends on other people's awarding, and the obtaining of honor is uncertain. First of all, this paper sorts out the concept of honor and the background of the concept of honor in Aristotle's ethics, and emphasizes the important influence of honor on the ancient Greek values. Secondly, it analyzes the proposition that "honor is the greatest external good". It holds that the external good cannot be simply understood as the external good relative to the soul. When analyzing the classification of the three kinds of good, it is found that the influence of the external good on happiness is internal. As the greatest external good,honor is more internal because of its virtue value and soul influence. Thirdly, it analyzes that "honor is the reward of virtue", analyzes that the distribution of honor is "deserve", whether the distribution of "deserve" is fair, under the distribution of honor, individuals need to rely on their own virtue value to obtain honor, and other external goodness can only play a role as the elements of virtue life. Finally, return to the honor in the text of Nicomachean Ethics, analyze the honor from the three perspectives of the giver, honor and the receiver, and clarify that the pursuit of honor is divided into the pursuit in the sense of nature and even. Affirming the inner virtue of an individual is the foundation of being worthy of honor. The receiver's attitude towards honor is not passive acceptance, but active pursuit. We can't simply regard honor as the external good of the giver. The obtaining of honor is based on the inner virtue of the receiver. Honor plays an internal role in our mind, and it becomes a part of the inner value of happy life because of its connection with virtue. |
