At the beginning of the establishment of the People's Republic of China, Modern Chinese History Series were a large compilation of modern history of China, after the dominant position in Marxism Historiography. This paper will be based on Modern Chinese History Series as the center of research, and will make a comprehensive analysis and research, from the background of its completion, the purpose of its compilation, the group of its editors, the process of its compilation, the characteristics of its compilation, the value of its historical materials, and the influence on the study of modern Chinese history in "17 Years" Period. The study of modern history of China began to the Republic of China. But because the study of modern history was influenced by many factors, such as the academic trend, changes in the situation, politic view, partisan interests, academic trend of thought, so the study of modern Chinese history in this period was not yet mature in many respects. After the establish of the People's Republic of China in October 1949, the dominant position of Chinese Marxist historiography was established. Specific to the field of modern history China, it was necessary to establish and improve the study of modern Chinese history in Marxism Historiograph, which had already been established in the period of Yanan. And then we should sum up the experience of the development of modern Chinese history and the success of the Chinese revolution from the academic and political aspects. Modern Chinese History Series were compiled in this context. Under the leadership of the Chinese Society of History, the member of the general editorial board and each topic had been determined. And then, the member of the general editorial board picked up compilers. Finally, it was published by the Shen-Chou Kuo-Kuang She. In the compilation of personnel selection and composition, Modern Chinese History Series were completed by famous Marxist historians and a group of famous scholars. Under the guidance of Marxist historians, such as Fan Wenlan, Jian Bozan, many famous scholars, like Shao Xunzheng, Bai Shouyi, Zheng Tianting, Jin Yufu and so on, carefully planned the various topics and compiling principles of the information of modern Chinese history, in the new historical pattern and the context of history. They refered to the various files, saw the writings of many people, read over the datas, after more than ten years, the first ten parts of the Modern Chinese History Series had been published. In the codification thought, the basic principles of Materialism and Marxist historiography runs through the compilation of the Modern Chinese History Series. In the background of Revolutionary Paradigm, the Modern Chinese History Series had the characteristics of laying particular stress on the informations of polity, revolutionary, class struggle. In the value of historical materials, editors’ methods of selecting informations were to select reliable and brief informations, to select new and detailed informations, and to keep the authenticity of informations. Therefore, editors kept a lot of one hand informations, such as only existing copies, precious copies and original manuscripts. Based on those, editors started from the consciousness of streamlining the text, restoring the full picture of the information, and meeting the realities of the political needs. They were also dealing with some of the historical records, such as supplement and revise. Editors strict and careful compilation attitude made the Modern Chinese History Series have important historical value. Modern Chinese History Series had a profound influence on the study of modern Chinese history, and laid the historical basis for the study of modern Chinese history. It had a great influence on the study of peasant war, Sino-Foreign relation, westemizationing movement, the reform movement of 1898, the revolution of 1911, modern Chinese ethnic relations. It also played a great role in promoting the research of the orientation in modern history of China, research paradigms, research characteristics, talent cultivation. In this sense, the Modern Chinese History Series played a decisive role in the history of modern Chinese historiography.
