引诗是《左传》中很典型的一种话语形式，关于《左传》引诗，学界多以“断章取义”来概括其特点，并且经常把引诗和赋诗放在一起研究，而忽略了其作为一个独特的文化现象所具有的意义。赋诗固然是春秋时期比较典型的用诗方式，但随着春秋历史的结束，这一文化活动就戛然而止了。但是引诗并没有中断，而且得到了长足的发展，后代对诗义的解读和阐释都可以在《左传》中找到痕迹。这说明《左传》引诗作为一种特殊的话语方式，不仅是当时政治交往的工具，而且对后世的《诗经》学产生了深远的影响。本文试图对《左传》引诗做一下梳理，旨在探究引诗的诗义发展和阐释方式，并尝试探讨引诗所反映出来的政治体制特征和古人的治国理想。《左传》中的人物在外交场合中经常引用《诗》来作为论据，以此可以看出其阐释诗义的特点。《左传》引诗是在《诗》本义基础上的引申与发挥，通过分析诗义可以看出：《左传》引诗与其他文献引诗很相似，说明它们有一个共同的诗义来源，这个源头就是西周对诗义的解读，同时，贵族阶层良好的《诗》学素养也为《左传》引诗提供了一个共同的话语场景。引诗过程中形成了巧用逻辑、以史说诗、概括诗旨、兴喻联想和字义解读等阐释方式。这些阐释方式反映了春秋时期的引诗规则和诗义解读方式，体现了引诗者对《诗》的灵活运用。这些阐释方式在战国和汉代得到了继承和长足发展，形成了古代特殊的诗义阐释体系。引诗过程中强烈的谏诤方式反映出在西周分封制度下诸侯与天子之间的权力制衡。另外，宗子情怀和对家国的强烈责任感也使诸侯、卿大夫在引诗时表现出直谏的特点。同时，西周礼乐制度和引诗者良好的《诗》学素养又使引诗具有了“和”的精神和隐约委婉的特征，给引诗打上了礼乐的文化底色。《左传》引诗是早期儒家诗教的源头，引诗过程中对君子人格的呼唤体现了古人“治贵反诸性命之情”的治国方式，即通过自身的修为来达到影响他人和政治的目的。这既是当时的一种治国理想，也是当时的人们独特自身价值观的反映，是天人合一的观念在现实社会活动中的体现。
