Vladimir Nabokov is praised as one of the most influential and controversial Russian-American novelist in world literature in the 20th century. Both his earlier and later writings attach great importance to the structure and continuity of the whole subject. Symbolism is used quite often in his writings to express his ideas, and such writing style is very common in postmodern literature. Lolita is the most famous novel of Nabokov, and is often considered as his best work. The novel brings an international reputation to Nabokov. Since its publication, it has posed a controversial topic to the reader and left it unsolved from generation to generation. This thesis attempts to analyze postmodernism in Lolita and explain the typical characteristics of postmodernism. By doing this, the thesis can help readers to understand the controversial issue in the novel. The thesis is divided into two parts: the first part will introduce the author and the concept of postmodernism, and then will summarize and review the predecessors’ research of Lolita as well as Nabokov’s writing style; and the following part will choose three typical characteristics of postmodernism: fragmentation, irony and parody, and further analyze their embodiment in the novel. In the end, the thesis will summarize postmodern features in Lolita.
