现代化是中国近代以降最引人注目、最持久的“中国问题”。中国儿童文学作为社会现代化的产物,其发生发展与现代化的潮起潮落相呼应。作为中国现代化进程的亲历者和见证者,茅盾始终以强烈的社会责任感和使命感关注着中国的儿童文学事业,在中国儿童文学演进史的重要节点上做出了贡献。
茅盾出生于较早受现代文明洗礼的沿海小城——乌镇。吴越文化滋养了茅盾温和敦厚的品性,赋予了他取之不尽的创作灵感。而童年所受的家庭教育和求学经历开阔了茅盾的视野,为他打下了良好的古典文学基础,这是茅盾文学生命的出发点。此后,不同的时代语境之下,茅盾的社会身份不断变化、叠加。不同角色之间相互影响、相互渗透。时代语境与多重身份的规约使得茅盾的文学选择呈现出一定程度的复杂性。

文体是呈现文学作品的容器,儿童文学现代化的表现之一便是儿童文学文体的自觉。而茅盾为儿童文学初期的文体建设起了不可忽略的拓荒之功。茅盾编纂的《中国寓言初编》是中国近代以来第一部古代寓言选本,与孙毓修合编的《童话》丛书是第一部白话儿童文学读物,由此开启了中国儿童文学从编译到改写的文体实践。此外,茅盾曾在《儿童世界》杂志上发表了 16 篇神话,这是国内第一次向儿童系统介绍神话故事。在翻译的基础上,茅盾发表了一系列神话学研究论文,为中国神话研究初步搭建起一个较为完整的体系。

当救亡图存成为近现代中国的历史背景,当文学成为启蒙利器,这在某种程度上也注定了中国儿童文学的现代化进程将朝着一条现实主义的方向行进。茅盾作为一位有担当的现实主义作家,创作了一批聚焦儿童问题,书写儿童现实生活的儿童小说。如茅盾在《大鼻子的故事》中展现了三十年代流浪儿童的生存境遇;在《少年印刷工》中,茅盾则讲述了在一个物质匮乏、精神贫瘠的年代少年儿童如何寻找自我的故事。与此同时,茅盾一直关注着儿童文学的新动向,撰写了一系列颇有见地的儿童文学评论,其中《六〇年少年儿

童文学漫评》更是在中国儿童文学史上有着里程碑的意义。

Modernization is the most compelling China Issue since the beginning of the Modern Era. As a byproduct of social modernization, the occurrence and development of Chinese children's literature echoes the rise and fall of modernization. As a witness of China's modernization process,Mao Dun has always paid close attention to China's children's literature with a strong sense ofsocial responsibility and mission, and made his own contribution to the important node of the evolution history of China's children's literature.
Mao Dun was born in Wuzhen, a small coastal town baptized by modern civilization. Wu Yue culture nourished Mao Dun's gentle and honest character and gave him inexhaustible creative inspiration. The family education and study experience in his childhood broadened Mao Dun's vision and laid a good foundation for classical literature, which is the starting point of Mao Dun's literary life. Since then, different times have given Mao Dun different social identities. Different roles affect and permeate each other. The era context and multiple identities make Mao Dun's literary choice show a certain degree of complexity.
Style is the container for presenting literary works. One of the manifestations of the modernization of children's literature is the consciousness of children's literary style. Mao Dun played an important pioneering role in the stylistic construction of children's literature in the early stage. The first compilation of Chinese fables compiled by Mao Dun is the first anthology of ancient fables in modern China, and the fairy tale series jointly compiled with sun Yuxiu is the first vernacular children's literature reading, which opened the stylistic practice of Chinese children's literature from compilation to rewriting. In addition, Mao Dun published 16 myths in children's World magazine, which is the first time in China to systematically introduce fairy tales to children. On the basis of translation, Mao Dun published a series of mythological research papers, which initially set up a relatively complete system for the study of Chinese mythology. 

When saving the nation from subjugation and striving for survival has become the historical background of modern China, and when literature has become a sharp weapon of enlightenment, to some extent, it is also doomed that the modernization process of Chinese children's literature will move in a realistic direction. As a group of realistic writers, Mao Dun focuses on children's novels. For example, Mao Dun showed the living conditions of street children in the 1930s in the story of big nose; In the young printer, Mao Dun tells the story of how children find themselves in an era of material scarcity and spiritual barrenness. At the same time, Mao Dun has been paying attention to the new trend of children's literature and has written a series of insightful children's literature reviews. Among them, the review of children's literature in 1960 is a milestone in the history of Chinese children's literature.
