Abstract As a political ideology, Republicanism has exerted a great influence in modern history. During the seventeenth century James Harrington emerged as an influential republican and writer. His masterpiece The Commonwealth of Oceana portrayed a particular blueprint for a republic and put forward Harrington’s distinctive understandings about Republicanism. In modern political history, The Commonwealth of Oceana is increasingly studied, and has recently drawn attention due to its academic value. This paper aims at exploring Harrington’s thoughts by analyzing his viewpoint of Republic in The Commonwealth of Oceana based on the economic policy of Republic, participatory democracy of Republic, and managing a country by laws. This paper consists of five chapters. The first chapter introduces the subject. Whilst the second chapter illustrates the economic policy of Republic; we will focus on “Agrarian Laws of Oceana” in The Commonwealth of Oceana and analyze the influence of these laws. The third chapter introduces Harrington’s opinions of participatory democracy of Republic in The Commonwealth of Oceana. We will demonstrate nobility as an example to portray Harrington’s idea. The fourth chapter explores Harrington’s conception in managing a country by laws. “The Election Law” will be taken as an example to illustrate Harrington’s understanding of Republic. The fifth chapter draws some conclusion.
