This thesis is concerned with Martha Hill, a pioneer during the development of the American higher dance education in the twentieth century. With her long-term view, modern dance and higher dance education established a strong relationship. She insisted that “dance is an art”. Under her efforts, dance obtained its own independent status as an artistic discipline. Reshaping the development of the American Higher Dance Education was based on sports in the early days. By using professional standards, which made higher dance education gradually move towards the direction of artistic development, Hill finally established the goals of dance professional development as the founding director of the Dance Departments at New York University, Bennington College and The Juilliard School. It can be concluded that Martha Hill played an important role in the development of higher dance education in the United States. According to the characteristics of various periods, namely the "penetration", "comprehensive "and"centralized" periods, Hill took American higher dance education towards specialization and a variety of art forms. This thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is an overview of the history of dance in higher education in the United States and the education, teaching and dancing experience of Martha Hill as she pushed to reshape the process. The second, third and fourth chapter analyzes the development of the dance program at New York University, Bennington College and Juilliard school, respectively. The fifth chapter makes a conclusion of her legacy. Here I establish an effective connection between modern dance and higher dance education. On the one hand, the ideas and methods of modern dance inject vigor to higher dance education; On the other hand, higher dance education provides a hotbed of communication and transmission for the development of modern dance. It strengthened the development of modern dance in the United States and established higher dance education in the United States based on the characteristics of modern dance as well. .In conclusion, I illustrate that Martha Hill played a leading role in the development of higher dance education in the United States and I hope that this will provide references for the future research, such as the professional development of China's Higher Dance Education.
