Brave New World is written by British author Aldous Huxley, one of the recognized pioneers of the modern thought. Huxley finished this work in 1931 and published it in 1932. Set in an intelligence-based social hierarchy, the novel depicts a future world dominated by the leveled reproductive technology, psychological control and scientific conditioning, in which, all the people live in an illusory comfort and happiness. The author uses a variety of satiric tactics to demonstrate the falsehood of technology bliss, implying that this is a dystopian rather than a utopian future. Brave New World has been continually discussed and studied after its publication. This thesis analyzes the three types of irony in Brave New World, the situational irony, the dramatic irony and the verbal irony. The situational irony connects closely with the novel’s background settings. By introducing two essential technological foundations, the leveled birth control and the psychological medicine, Brave New World brings readers unexpected reading experience when they realize that the two techniques are forbidden in reality. Dramatic irony is linked with the portraits construction. The audience is able to predict the characters’ fate in advance when they realize the extremity of the characters. This creates the similar effect like the tragedy. The verbal irony sets the keynote of the disutopian theme by applying the objective tone and the unusual argumentative speech. The exquisite use of irony in this work successfully evokes readers’ thinking on technology, the happiness of individual and the civilization ofsociety.
