The term “tongren girls” refers to young women participating in doujin culture who create derivative works based on interpretation and imagination of characters in existing works. The creative activities of tongren girls have epitomized one of the most influential massive cultures in China during recent years. Against the rising rationalization and marketization of intimate relationships, this research focuses on an alternative “affect schema” presented by the creation and imagination of tongren girls, analyzing the structural transition in the emotional life of young people by discussing how women’s affect experiences are intertwined with their imagination generated in doujin culture. Based on year-long fieldwork, this dissertation dived into single interviews and participant observation to interpret the autonomous logic of doujin culture as a heterotopian affect space. Tongren girls consciously distance their imagination from the emotional style of “reality” and construct idealized relationships among fictional characters, in which the authenticity of affect is prioritized. Departing from the mainstream emotional style, this notion emphasizing authenticity is also reflected in tongren girls’ real daily life, which conflicts with the programmed and superficial intimacy. In dialogue with the concept of “emotional capitalism” from Eva Illuz that is permeating Chinese society, I try to explore the potential counterpoint to the commercialization of emotions in the affect schema of tongren girls. The emotional style of tongren girls holds the potential to reflect upon and change the marketized intimacy. However influenced by the tribalization of interactions, the rationalization of relationships may be continued during the process by which individuals are pursuing authentic affect, and the splitting in emotional life should be tackled to serve this pursuit. |
