The impact of trade on carbon dioxide emissions has become the main focus in recent years but Africa has received little attention as compared to other countries. This study analyses the impact of China-Africa trade on carbon dioxide emissions and value-added creation in China, Africa and other countries. Multi- regional Input-output analysis and data of 49 countries with 162 sectors from 1995 to 2015 were used in this study. The results indicate that there is an increase of carbon dioxide emissions from 1995 to 2015 for both China and Africa; China's carbon dioxide emissions were not only significantly higher than those of Africa, but also increased more. Carbon dioxide emissions for China was 3 billion tonnes in 1995 while that of Africa was only 0.2 billion tonne), and in 2015 China had almost 10 billion tonnes of Carbon dioxide emissions while Africa had only 0.8 billion tonne. The most important sources of carbon dioxide emissions and value added creation in China and Africa are complete domestic production and consumption. For bilateral trade between China and Africa, Africa mainly exports intermediate products, while China's final products account for a higher proportion. The different sectoral structures of China’s and Africa’s carbon emissions and value added creation reflected that China had the stronger manufacturing industry while the mining and agriculture occupied higher proportion in industrial system of Africa. Meanwhile, it has also been found that some sectors emit high amount of carbon dioxide but they have very little value added creation (such as electricity, heat and water supply) while others have very little carbon dioxide emissions but they have high value added creation. Bilateral trade between China and Africa also had an important impact on the carbon dioxide emissions and value added creation of other countries such as the United States, India, Japan, Germany, and Russia. The United States, Japan and South Korea generated greatest carbon dioxide emission (300 – 561 kilo tonnes) and value added (560 – 1087 Million EUR) in the China's export to Africa, while United States of America, India and some European countries were affected most by African exports to China Carbon dioxide emission (150 - 306 kilo tonnes) and value added (190 -309 Million EUR). This paper constructs an analysis framework for the impact of bilateral trade on the carbon emissions and value-added creation of trading countries and other countries. The results can provide support for climate policy adjustments related to China-Africa trade. |

Born in a very poor family but her parents worked very hard and by the grace of God she was selected to go to Army Secondary School. Life wasn’t easy considering that more is needed to educate a girl child but with her parents hardworking she excellently completed her secondary school and was selected to go to one of the famous public universities in Malawi (Mzuzu University) to pursue Bachelors of Science in Education where she majors in Biology and Chemistry and passed with upper second class. In 2017 she joined the teaching profession where she was posted to teach chemistry and biology at one of the government secondary schools in Malawi. As a science teacher she contributed a lot in the teaching profession |
