 Women in Dubliners

Critics often accuse Joyce of misogyny based on their analysis of characterization of women in his works. They confuse Joyce’s attitudes towards women in real life with that towards those in the fictional world. Actually it is unfair to call Joyce a misogynist since he was closely in touch with several women in his life, got help from them, and held respect and sympathy towards them. In examining the characterization of female characters in the collection, some critics such as Conroy and Henke tend to misunderstand the attitudes the author implicitly holds towards them. The thesis aims at exploring the women problem as represented in Dubliners. For a better understanding of Joyce’s attitude towards the issue, the present study focuses on re-reading characterization of the female characters in the collection with due attention to the social backgrounds in Joyce’s time. The female characters in the stories can be divided into three groups according to the gender roles they play, namely, young girls, married women, and spinsters.Such a methodology may draw some attention to the realistic aspect in Joyce as an important representative in literary modernism. The portrayal of various females in the collection reflects to some extent Joyce’s deep concern for the life of Dublin women. In fitting into or struggling against their respective gender roles, the female characters are depicted with different nuances, ranging from an explicit tone of sympathy to subtle expressions of deplorability or criticism. The varied characterization of the female characters reflected in the analogy between themselves, together with their relationship with the male characters and the male narrator, contributes to the ambivalence in the author’s attitudes towards the women in Dublin in Joyce’s time.
