Acne is predominantly known as a skin disorder of the adolescent population. However, current research indicates that the prevalence of adult patients with acne. Adult acne is a chronic condition that appears to impact the quality of life in adult patients more than in their younger counterparts with considerable psychological, social, and emotional impacts. First of all, this research observed the dermatology department in four hospitals, and carried out an in-depth interview with 20 respondents (including 18 adult patients). Based on the interview, this study presents the illness narratives of adult patients, and summarizes their basic characteristics. Second, this research explores the underlying logic behind the behavior of acne patients not looking in the mirror. This study found that adult patients' social-imagination, body-imagination and self-imagination were distorted after suffering from acne. In order to cope with the disease, adult patients hold a special body imagination of “negative body”, and reshape themselves through the technologies of the self, including body control and emotion regulation. At last, in this research, adult patients, after encountering the social stigma, can hardly fight back or talk back. Additionally, the meaning of acne is ambiguous and can not be integrated into the order of normal and abnormal. The modern discourse of cutting and integrating all things and phenomena promotes the birth of clinical medicine and makes acne a disease. |
