摘　要 由于黑塞晚期作品中女性角色几乎消失，因此本文从黑塞的早中期作品入手研究黑塞小说中的女性形象。在黑塞的作品中，女性角色常常为人所忽略，但无论是早期还是中期，女性角色对主人公行为、选择和思想始终具有重要影响。 在早期作品中，女性是主人公求而不得的恋爱对象，或者婚姻中不合适的伴侣。主人公与女性的关系在这一时期往往是失败的，而失败的关系带来的痛苦和思考影响着主人公的精神世界。而在中期作品中，女性则成为了正面的推动力，作为主人公探寻自我道路上的领路人和心灵的引导者等形象出现，对主人公的人生道路产生至关重要的影响。 黑塞笔下的女性，随着不同的时期发生了很大的变化，但不变的是她们其实是生活的象征。女性与男性的关系从早期到中期发生的巨大转变，也体现了作者对艺术与生活的关系有了新的态度。

Abstract Here an attempt will be made to interpret the significance of the female characters in the novels of Hermann Hesse. Based on the fact that the female characters are nearly excluded from the late works of the famous writer and thinker, thus the interpretation would be concentrated on the early and middle works. Actually, these female characters should be given much more attention than they are, for they made their important influences on the development of the male heroes. In every of early works, there is always a female character being plotted for the male hero (and even his male companion or friend) as the obsessed object in unrequited affection or the frustrating partner in unhappy marriage. Moreover, the male hero in early works appears to be a loser before one of the female characters, and his contemplation on his failure as well as his suffering makes a significant impact on the evolution and even revolution in his spiritual world. Then, it is made clear that there must be one of the female characters in every of middle works who plays a much more positive role than before - appearing as the guide of male hero especially for his spiritual exploration, and precipitates his commitment to the cause. Therefore, it can be inferred that female characters, although remaining to incarnate secular life and sensual world, play their different roles from early works to middle works, which also could be considered to reflect the creator Hermann Hesse’s observation about the relationship between art and life.
