The mental health issues among Chinese university students, such as anxiety, depression, and insomnia, have been on the rise. The privacy concerns of the mental health services provided by schools and the low popularity of existing mental health apps with online counseling among university students are being questioned. These apps also lack personalization, professionalism, and data privacy security. Previous studies have shown that mindfulness meditation has significant benefits for the main mental health issues of university students. However, existing meditation-related apps have several issues, such as high fees, time constraints for practice, inadequate community content, and lack of social experience, which do not fully meet the needs of university students. Therefore, this study attempts to design a mindfulness meditation app for university students to help them learn and practice meditation and improve their mental health. Four research questions were proposed for this purpose. For research question one, "What are the characteristics of university students with improvement needs in mental health and how are these needs addressed?" The survey results showed that employment, academics, and social interactions had the highest impact on the mental health of university students. Nearly half of the students did not seek help from campus mental health centers and only occasionally used mental health apps. For research question two, "What is the current situation and demand for university students using mental health apps?" Through a questionnaire survey, it was found that university students have a high demand for "relaxation audios" and "psychological assessments," and they value the "professionalism" and "privacy protection" of the products. They are dissatisfied with the design of social modules in existing apps. For research question three, "What are the needs and pain points of university students during meditation practice and when using meditation apps?" Based on the results of the questionnaire survey, an interview outline was prepared, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 university students who had meditation experience and had used mental health apps. The interview records were coded to obtain seven needs and three pain points, including "social needs," "privacy and security needs," and "learning needs." Using user profiles and user journey maps, the results of user research were summarized, and 12 functional points were generated through brainstorming. Then, using the C-BOX method, six core functions were selected based on creativity and feasibility, which are team meditation, real-time meditation chat room, data security settings, information visibility settings, custom meditation, and mindfulness meditation Q&A. Product design was conducted according to the hierarchy of the five elements of user experience, and the final design solution was produced with prototype diagrams, addressing the research question of "How to design a meditation app that meets the needs and pain points of university students?" Finally, usability testing and expert evaluation were conducted to test the effectiveness, usability, and user experience of the product. The results of the usability testing showed that the product has good usability and meets the needs of the target users. The issues and suggestions raised by experts were summarized in three aspects, and the prototype of the product was iteratively designed to provide a better user experience, which is conducive to promotion and application among university students. The process and results of this research can also be extended to the design of mental health products for other university student populations. |
