英国作家毛姆于1919年来到中国，在四个月的时间内游历了北京、上海、重庆、四川、香港等地，此后他写下关于中国的 58 篇游记，收集成册，名为《在中国屏风上》。笔者将以此书为基础，分析其中的中国形象，以此揭示毛姆的文化优越感和他的东方主义心理。 首先，我将从“异国情调的景象”和 “理想化的生活”这两个方面来分析毛姆笔下 “想象的中国”。接着，我将分析毛姆对于中国的现状所表现出来的看客心理。然后，我将进一步分析毛姆将中国作为怀旧的场所和西方的异己的文化心理。 最后，我们得出这样得结论，毛姆来中国是为了逃避英国的现代化给他带来的焦虑和自我的丧失，而通过他自己审美体验和想象，他建构了一个充满异国情调的中国来满足自己的情感，并在中英比较中肯定了英国的优越。我们并不否认毛姆对于中国怀有真正的欣赏，但他的态度并不利于中西的交流，而是反映了他的东方主义心理和文化优越感。

The English writer W.S.Maugham came to China in 1919.After four months'travel in Beijing, Shanghai, Sichuan and Hong Kong, he published 58 travel essays included in a book On A Chinese Screen.This paper is going to analyze Maugham's images of China based on On On 0n a Chinese Screen and reaveal his cultural psyche and his orientalism behind these images. Firstly,I am going to analyze the "imaginary China"depicted by Maugham from two aspects: exotic scenery and idealized ways of life, both of which are far from the reality of China.Then Maugham as an onlooker in China will be analyzed through his attitudes towards the modernity in China. Thirdly, I am going to delve into Maugham's cultural psyche. This will be analyzed through his regarding China as a romantic place where his nostalgia can be expressed and through his intention of deliberately comparing China with the West in order to validate the values and status of the West. Finally, we come to the conclusion that Maugham came to China to escape worries, anxiety,loss of selfness resulting from the modernization of England and to reconstruct the ancient,brilliant China through his own aesthetic sense and imagination. Without denying that Maugham had sincere affection for China, we should say his attitudes are by no means a proper way for cultural exchange between the west and China.On the whole,they manifest Maugham's orientalism and cultural superiority.
